Chapter eighteen

My phone alarm woke me up, the jangly tune cutting through dreams that had already started fading away by the time I turned it off.

I rolled over, staring up at the ceiling and willing myself to get up.

Summer break had started, and I was paying my dues at the ice cream shop. I couldn’t complain too much — how many other kids knew they could take over a successful business when they wanted. Sure, it might only be a few stores, but it still meant my path was staked out for me. That didn’t mean I was dying to get out of bed and serve angry customers all day.

Gathering all of my willpower, I crawled out of bed and got dressed. The store didn’t open until ten a.m., and I had time for breakfast before I needed to report in. Making my way downstairs, I found the house was already empty. My dad had probably headed off to his office at the main location, and my mom would be at her job as well, dealing with whatever clients were coming in.

I didn’t have to look far for breakfast. My parents had already stocked all my favorites. I think they were excited to have me back, even for just a summer. It might be my last one at home. Since I graduated in a year, I’d hope to get my own place if I could swing it. Maybe even move to Chicago or New York and try and get a little experience at another company before coming back to run the family business.

I poured some cereal and sat down at the table. My friend Pritchard had texted me a bunch overnight. There was a reason I kept him muted.

Pritchard: Dude, new game coming out this week.

Pritchard: Some hero battler.

Pritchard: Characters are sick. Lots of babes.

Pritchard: Think we should get into it?

Pritchard: You asleep or something? It’s only 2.

Pritchard: Or are you banging?

Pritchard: Oh, yeah, when is Jacqueline getting there? She there already?

Pritchard: Ugh, fine.

Pritchard: Whatever.

Pritchard: Let’s play tomorrow.

I wrote back.

Carter: I have to work. That means getting some sleep instead of gaming all night.

Carter: And she gets here today.

He didn’t respond, but considering his last message came after three a.m., I figured he was deep asleep.

Jacqueline. Man, that was a whole other bundle of nerves. Jacqueline — or Jackie, to me — and I had gotten pretty serious over the last year. It was hard to believe we’d only met eight months earlier, because it felt like we’d known each other longer. My parents were excited to meet her, and it felt like a big step towards the future.

She had stayed back at the college, since her rental was year round. She also had a part-time job at the public library, and could pick up extra hours while the others took summer trips. I’d been back for three weeks, and though we talked every night, I still missed her. This evening could get here soon enough.

Messages sent, I flipped over to a browser while I finished eating.
